OK, this week it gets a little tougher as not only do you have to choose your All-Time Blue Bombers Team kicker but you have to decide what is most important to you in the kicking game. Air Max 720 For Sale . An argument can be made for having separate categories for both a place kicker and a punter but for timing reasons the decision was made to band the kickers into one category. One may not agree but this is the format we’ve chosen. So the first step is to decide whether one wants to vote for a punter, a place kicker or a dual punter-place kicker. Either way, the Bombers have had a rich history of kickers solving the swirling Prairie winds to give the franchise an edge in field position and by tacking up points with accurate field goal kicking while the opposition floundered. Voters have selected Ken Ploen as the quarterback, Chris Walby as the offensive lineman and Greg Battle as the linebacker of the Free Press/TSN 1290 All-Time Bombers Team. This week it’s your turn to select a kicker for the team. Bud Grant and our panel have had their say. Now you get to weigh in. We’re presenting a position each week over a nine-week period with our panel’s choices of the top-five Winnipeg Blue Bombers to ever play for the club at that spot. Cast your vote at wfp.to/alltimebombers. On Friday afternoons at 4 p.m., live on TSN 1290’s Hustler and Lawless program, the Free Press and TSN 1290 websites, as well as the Saturday edition of the Winnipeg Free Press, we’ll announce the winner and member of the All-Time Bombers Team. Legendary Blue Bombers player and coach Bud Grant headlines our panel. Grant was joined by former Bombers player and GM Paul Robson, Canadian Football Hall of Fame inductee and Free Press sports reporter Ed Tait, Free Press columnist and TSN 1290 host Gary Lawless and TSN 1290’s Andrew “Hustler” Paterson. Panelists were provided a statistical breakdown of the Bombers dating back to the 1950s as well as an anecdotal package of the early Bombers teams when statistics were not recorded. Each panelist brought a unique perspective and personal set of criteria. Grant joined the group via conference call from a cabin in the Wisconsin woods while the rest huddled around a boardroom table at the Free Press. From Grant’s gravelly voice emanating out of the telephone speaker, to Tait’s vivid recollections of games and players, to Robson’s cold analysis of a players strengths and weaknesses, to Paterson’s views from the upper decks of our stadiums, there were strong opinions all around. Some players were quickly selected. Others were hotly debated. Sometimes it came down to a clash of eras. Others made it on the merit of championship wins while those without rings on their fingers were often set aside. Vote a maximum of once per day and help choose the Blue Bombers player you consider the best at the following positions to be presented in this order: Quarterback, offensive lineman, linebacker, kicker, kick returner, running back, defensive lineman, defensive back and receiver. We’ve done our part. The final decisions are up to you. So vote and vote often. You’re the GM of this team. Make your choices. KICKER TROY WESTWOOD, 1991-2007 The all-time leading scorer in Bomber history with 2,748 points, which ranks fifth overall in CFL history. Was also an effective punter in the days after Bob Cameron retired. A Bombers Hall of Famer. BOB CAMERON*, 1980-2002 An all-star QB in college — he won the Hec Crighton Award at Acadia in 1977 as the top player in Canadian college football — Cameron was cut several times by a number of teams before landing in Winnipeg. He hasn’t left since. Durable and consistent, Cameron was a four-time CFL All-Star who was named the top Canadian in the 1988 Grey Cup. CHARLIE SHEPARD, 1957-62 Came to Winnipeg after one year with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the days when players played more than one position. Shepard was a running back who was the MVP of the 1959 Grey Cup, but was also called by Bud Grant the best punter he had ever seen. TREVOR KENNERD, 1980-91 Retired as the Bombers’ all-time leading scorer (surpassed by Troy Westwood), Kennerd won three Grey Cups and was a CFL All-Star in 1981 and 1985. Enshrined in the Bomber HOF in 1998. ED ULMER, 1965-71 As versatile as they come, Ulmer played defensive back, running back, kicked and returned kicks during his days in the CFL. Inducted into the Bomber HOF in 1993. gary.lawless@freepress.mb.ca Twitter: @garylawless Air Max 720 Sale Outlet . His fellow Finn, 21 years his junior, had just arrived in Anaheim and was hoping to stick with the Ducks. The way Selanne saw it, if Vatanen was going to make it in southern California, he needed to have his own wheels. So the future Hall of Famer, an avid car collector, decided to lend Vatanen, a smooth-skating defenceman, one of his. A Mercedes CLK to be precise. "I havent seen it in a year-and-a-half," Selanne said with a chuckle. "I dont know if I like that car actually," Vatanen said with a big smile, "but its free." Selanne and Saku Koivu, another Finnish veteran, have mentored Vatanen, Anaheims fourth round pick in 2009, over the last couple of years. Koivu and his wife Hanna, for example, helped Vatanen get his apartment set up. "You can tell that both of them have taken Sami under their wing," said Ducks defenceman Ben Lovejoy. "Hes not even their little brother, hes sort of their son." Told of that statement, the 43-year-old Selanne doesnt miss a beat noting, "He could be." The groundwork laid by Selanne and Koivu paid dividends in the regular season as Vatanen was the third leading scorer among Ducks defencemen picking up 21 points in just 48 games. "Its a big thing," said Vatanen. "Ive been watching those guys for a while. It was fun to get a chance to play with them and its more fun even in the playoffs." Vatanen played in just nine of Anaheims final 32 regular-season games and started the playoffs in the minors with Norfolk in the American Hockey League. He was recalled in time for Game 3 of the series with the Los Angeles Kings making an immediate impact. Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau even went so far as to label the youngster the best player on the ice on either team on Thursday night. Vatanen didnt slow downn in his second career NHL playoff game on Saturday night, picking up his first post-season point, an assist on Ryan Getzlafs power play goal. Air Max 720 Uk Cheap. He was also on the ice for Devante Smith-Pellys goal earlier in the period. "Just some confidence on the back end," said Lovejoy when asked what Vatanen brings to the table. "Getting offence against the Kings is difficult and having another smart puck mover back there is only going to put our forwards in better position to create offence." It is the 5-foot-10, 183-pound Vatanens gutsy play, which impresses Selanne the most. "Hes a warrior out there," said Selanne. "Hes not the biggest guy out there, but he doesnt avoid the traffic. Hes putting himself in a situation where hes going to get hit and give hits. Its fun to watch when young guys and small guys can do that. And obviously the way he can see the game and pass. He can make a huge difference." Selanne is nearing the end of his decorated career and takes great pride in being able to help an up-and-coming Finnish player find his way. After all, it was Teppo Numminen who helped a young Selanne navigate some early-career growing pains in Winnipeg. "I remember how much he helped me and thats why I want to do my job as well. And its fun and you see how much they appreciate it and how life is easier when you have help here and there," Selanne said. "Thats what we have done for years. Its so much easier for a young guy when theres a countryman who wants to help and makes things easier and gets you settled down. Thats a very important part of our job." In a way, Selannes career has come full circle as he passes the torch to the next rising Finnish star on the Ducks. So, did Numminen lend Selanne a car back in the day? "Actually, I let him drive my car," Selanne said with a grin. Some things never change. ' ' '
